Highlights From the Trip

The Breakers Mansion, Newport

Sail boats everywhere

Tourists enjoying the view during their audio tour at The Breaker’s Mansion

A mere 4-hour drive from New York City and two hours and a half from Connecticut, this seaside city is a favored weekend getaway for travel enthusiasts living on the East Coast. Back in July, 2019 we decided to visit this sailing nation for our weekend, which turned out to be one of the most pleasing road trips. Here’s why.

We spent our weekend indulged in decadent mansions to breathtaking cliff walks by the charming and affluent seaside view. This is the place where many millionaires have their summer homes from the gilded age. Luckily had perfect weather of late Summer and the view.

Things to Do at Newport for Free

Apart from abundant possibilities to enjoy boating and sailing, below are the few things which you can do as a visitor at Newport if you are looking forward to explore the best in less amount of time.

Cliff Walk

This 3.5 mile walkway covers the edge of Newport’s shoreline. Walk through the shoreline and enjoy sights of some of the grand and enchanting mansions on the way including The Breakers, Marble House, Rough Point etc.

Exploring Thames Street

Newport’s main commercial area. Find local shops like Newport Fudgery, Antique shops and All local food joints including conventional stores. This street area is also surrounded by colonies of homes that belong to the late 17th and 18th centuries which are worth exploring.

We happened to be hungry before visiting the castle, hence quickly reached Nikolas Pizza for an absolute cheesy treat from their range of delicious, authentic pizzas served since the 1980’s.

On our way to The Breaker's mansion, after a long drive on beautiful streets of New Port we finally found the pizza place we were looking for with a convenient parking spot. The interior reminds me of the Mrs. Maisel era. Established in 1980, Nikolas Pizza has been serving Newport locals and visitors for over 35 years. Though famous for pizza, their menu has grown considerably over the years to include homemade favorites such as lasagna, spinach pies, meatballs, roasted chicken, wings, salads, sandwiches, and more. We ordered plain cheese pizza with topping of basil to make it easy for our family which has got members from all three different generations. Yay! Oh and they also got cute sitting tables outside! Swipe right to check it out. #newport #nikolaspizza #rhodeisland #connecticutigers

Newport Kite Festival

(July 13th and 14h 2019 from 12pm-5pm) Here’s why you should plan your Newport trip in the second week of July. Luckily we happened to be there during this time and decided to follow the signs that took us to Newport Kite Festival. Enjoy flying kites or just sit by the scenic shore line, this place has got the perfect picnic vibe!

Dive in the History with Mansions from the Gilded Age

The Breakers (1895) is a Renaissance-style “summer cottage” inspired by the palaces in northern Italy. No surprise how lavish was the lifestyles of America’s wealthiest industrialists in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

This 70-rooms Mansion only had access to the kitchen and other behind-the-scenes rooms but I was gobsmacked by the absurdly expensive details in ornate gold ceilings, Italian marbles, French antique furnishings and fixtures, diamonds, rubies and other precious gems encrusted in the walls.

The audio tour of these mansions bring the history and stories to life with first person remembrances of the families talking about each and every detail present in the room with stories behind them. Damn this was like actually travelling back in time.

The outdoor grounds and the ocean view are a breathtaking treat to every visitor. Apart from the Breakers, the Elms(1901), Marble House(1892), Rosecliff (1902), Chateau-sur-Mer (1952), Isaac Bell House (1883) , Chepstow (1861) are more from the mesmerizing architectural examples you get to visit in this city.

Tickets to Self-guided Audio Tours

The mansion is usually open every day with tours starting at 9 a.m. closing between 3 to 6 p.m., depending on the season. Tours cost $20.99 for adults and $6.99 for children ages 6 to 17 years. (Children 5 and younger can visit for free.) Two- and five-house tickets, which include a visit to The Breakers, are also available for $25.99 or $32.99.

All tickets include self-guided audio tours designed for individuals or families, as well as access to the property’s grounds, restrooms and a gift shop. Check out The Preservation Society of Newport County’s website for more information on tours and operating hours.

At the end of the day, we bid adieu to the splendid view of people enjoying their bathe at the shore, sunsets, these captivating group of birds which looked like penguins until I zoomed in using my camera.
